Memorial Day 2009

We tried to get out of town for the weekend, but it didn't work out that way. Jenn and Josh were staying in Lincoln City for the weekend, so we hooked up with Leanna and headed out there to hang with them for the day. It was beautiful that day.

Our longest vacation since our honeymoon

It's a beautiful thing when a stay at home mother of toddlers gets a chance to actually miss her children. A chance to feel an urgency to see them. A chance to forget the "mommommomIneedyoumom" and just be happy that they're excited to see her too.

Mackenzie and Kaila were both in a parade on Saturday. They needed to be at the school at 8:30 and the parade started at 10:30, then Morgan had a Tball game on the other side of town at 12:00. We wanted Grandma to see both the parade and the Tball game and we wanted to be in the car by 2:00 heading down to Sunriver, leaving the kids with Grandma for four lovely days.

We were in the car by 2:30. Yeah. We rock.

Seriously, 2:30 was amazing considering everything that ended up getting in our way that day. It wasn't easy, but once we were on the road we were like Thelma and Louise or something. Like we were getting away with something. It was awesome.

We listened to 105.9 The Brew until we lost reception. It plays all 80s rock. Bon Jovi, Van Halen, lots of Def Lepard. I still have a sore neck from all the head banging. That music is happy times for both of us. We were feeling a little lost when we got over the mountain and couldn't get reception anymore, so I plugged in the Ipod and we listened to David Sedaris "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". It can't be legal to drive while laughing that hard.

It was the best vacation we've ever had. It was 90 degrees. We swam, we biked, we went on long walks. We didn't go out to eat. Chris used the barbecue and made me steak, which we ate with loaded mashed potatoes and caesar salad. We had our favorite cereals for breakfast each morning - Cinnamon Toast Crunch for me and Peanut Butter Captain Crunch for him - because that's something we never eat. We each ate a gallon of ice cream each night.

On our bike ride we accidentally exercised. I didn't realize how far away the park was and I really didn't realize that it was uphill all the way there. The ride back was nice, though. The downhill breeze felt good. We walked around the Sunriver Village Mall after our ride and drank a lot of water. While we were walking around Chris asked if I wanted to keep going straight (as opposed to going around an approaching corner) I nodded and MmmmHmmm'ed, that we should keep going. Then I kept walking straight. Then he turned to me and said "So, instead of answering me, you just keep walking and assume that's enough of an answer?"

I was surprised and I told him that I had answered him. We argued for a minute about whether or not I had said anything out loud. He said that he finally realized something about me. He realized, after 10 years, that I often answer him in my head, but no words come out, and that I really believe that I've answered him, but I haven't said anything at all.

He was all For 10 years I thought were a rude ****, but in reality you just answering me in your head!

And I was like, DUDE! You still married me! Why did you marry me if you thought I was that rude?

In complete seriousness he answered Well, I figured that after your looks wained your personality would improve.

Well, I showed him, didn't I? I'll just get meaner the uglier I get. That'll teach him.

The view from our balcony was breathtaking. I tried several times to get a picture of us with the view behind us but it didn't work. Here we are after our first trip to the pool. I'm not wearing makeup, but I didn't wear makeup the whole weekend. Just went around with my white nose stripe showing for all the world to enjoy. Here's a little bit better attempt, if it wasn't for Mr. Surprise Eyes. Here's the view. That's a golf course...and a mountain...and some water of some kind. The sun set each night right over there. It was gorgeous. But really, who needs that view, when you've got this...

I am truly grateful for a chance to relax with my husband and for Grandma coming to play with our kids for such a long weekend. They look forward to spending that time being spoiled by her and we are blessed to be able to leave them with no stress or worries. I feel so revived and rested today. I'm a lucky woman.
